RIDE FOR ROGAN!

November 19, 2009
We stopped and saw these cows all herded together in front of a small overpass in Western Kansas. They were on the opposite side of the road filling a pen about 300 feet wide. In front of them and continuing on our side of the road was a narrow exit that led to a giant field where I’m sure they’d much rather be. For whatever reason, cows in Kansas are terrified of bicycles and we scared them so much that the migration to the other side of the road quickly turned into chaos for the remaining 200 cows that hadn’t crossed yet. Pushing into eachother, some slipping in the mud, calves howling upon their exit, it was a spectacle that we stopped and observed for probably 20 minutes. We had a perfect overhead view of the entire procession and at one point tried to count what we thought were all the pregnant cows coming from under the passage. I think this is about the time when we finally broke down and began to embraced the smell of cows - a distinct odor that accompanied us most days on our rides east of Colorado.
